Benefits to the Community
Enhanced Service Capacity and Improved Patient Flow
HHC will purchase a 67,000 sq ft unimproved warehouse and be the sole occupant after extensive external and internal remodeling. Exam rooms will be increased: in Adult Medicine from 11 to 20, in Pediatrics from 7 to 18, in Women’s Services from 5 to 17 and in Dental from 8 to 12, and approximately 7,000 sq ft will be allocated to patient education. Clinical waiting room space will increase from 700 to 5200 sq ft. Total sq ft will be increased from 37,000 in our existing buildings to 67,000 in the renovated site. The new location will reduce congestion, improve productivity, and enable services to be available more hours to better serve the community. Administrative cost efficiency will be realized by reducing the number of sites and having more energy efficient systems. A full functioning EHR will improve patient safety, flow and outcomes. The re-design of operational processes will improve effectiveness and quality of care. The building will not only enable HHC to significantly expand access to care to the area’s most needy citizens, the project will be the catalyst for growth and economic recovery of the South Allison Hill area of the city.
In summary, this renovation project will address the following needs:
- Improve access to care for uninsured/underinsured Dauphin County(DC)residents. This will be accomplished by eliminating existing access barriers. The project will be located at 110 S 17th St in the City of Harrisburg’s most densely populated low income area and adjacent to two major bus routes. The site is in the epicenter of where HHC’s existing patients reside, enabling more people to walk to services. Multiple services will be co-located in the building creating a “one-stop” approach to health care. Interpreters will be onsite to assist Limited English Speaking patients to effectively communicate with staff and Benefit Coordinators will be available to help the uninsured enroll in eligible insurances including CHIP and Medicaid;
- Eliminate overcrowding conditions and operational inefficiencies by providing ample waiting and patient education spaces, redesign patient flow;
- Allow the consolidation of HHC’s primary Medical, Dental and Social Services programs into a single site and close its two oldest and most expensive to maintain sites;
- Improve provider performance by expanding the number of exam rooms and using an EHR in the exam room;
- Improve patient safety by using electronic prescribing and having lab results available at the point of service;
- Expand hours of operation so that services will be available during evening and weekends to reduce misuse/overuse of the ER and help patients remain connected to their primary care providers.
- Improve patient satisfaction by creating a one-stop Medical Mall that includes Hamilton Health Center and an on-site Pharmacy and Medical Laboratory.
- Increase economic efficiency by incorporating green design and energy efficient concepts into the building design and operation;
EMPOWERMENT ZONE COMMUNITY INVESTMENT
At completion, our facility will bring approximately 190 staff members and related service providers to work in the Allison Hill section of the City each day. Patient visits are projected to grow from nearly 65,000 today to more than 80,000 by 2012. We believe our investment will ignite redevelopment along the 17th Street Corridor and throughout the Allison Hill section of the City.
