Men Matter Fatherhood Initiative

Greater Harrisburg Healthy Start, a program of Hamilton Health Center, has a new and exciting initiative just for men! Men Matter seeks to educate, empower and engage fathers and father-figures in Harrisburg and surrounding communities.

MEN MATTER was created as a means by which dads can gain parenting skills, network with other fathers, receive free education on topics specific to men and be connected to community resources.

MEN MATTER consists of three components: Support, Education and Male Involvement. These three components work in conjunction with each other to provide a wealth of knowledge and a platform for father/child interaction.

  • Support: Healthy Start has partnered with the Fatherhood Academy so that our participants have a nurturing environment where they can share their experiences, hear valuable information from experts and learn effective parenting techniques.
  • Male Involvement: This will be the opportunity for the group to have fun with their children! Through games, field trips, sporting events, etc., the dads will enjoy spending quality time with their child/children while strengthening their paternal bonds and building memories that will last a lifetime.
  • Education: There will be free, male-centered, educational sessions held regularly for men only to discuss topics such as: male sterilization, child support/custody, infant/child safety, mental health services and appropriate child discipline.

There is also a curriculum for fathers that consist of six (6) classes. This cycle of learning is dictated by six specific themes: Fatherhood 101, Financial Stability, Fathers & Family Law, Health & Wellness, Relationships and Spirituality/Religion. A close examination of one theme will take place each class. Upon completion of the six classes, the fathers will receive a certificate and be invited to an annual Fathers’ Day Celebration.

  • CLASS 1– Fatherhood 101:
This class is designed to explore the expectations and responsibilities of fatherhood and parenting.
  • CLASS 2– Economics/Job Readiness:
This class focuses on financial education such as savings and investments to the proper way to locate and prepare for employment/entrepreneurial opportunities.
  • CLASS 3– Family Law & Domestic Relations:
This class will highlight the dynamics of family law as it pertains to custody, visitation, and various legal issues. Domestic Relations procedures and protocol will also be discussed.
  • CLASS 4– Male Reproductive Health:
This class will teach participants about HIV/AIDS prevention and treatments, STD’s/STI’s identification and treatment, male sterilization and family planning.
  • CLASS 5– Relationships:
This class will encourage participants to self-reflect on negative behavior patterns in relationships; how to identify healthy relationships, and how to co-parent with his child’s mother when the relationship has ended.
  • CLASS 6– Religion/Spirituality:
This class is designed to enlighten participants on the matter of faith and the importance of imparting moral values and a belief system into the lives of their child/children.
