Programs

ALLHAT 
ALLHAT which stands for Antihypertensive and Lipid-Lowering Treatment To Prevent Heart Attack Trial, is a program for qualified persons ages 55 and older.  The program, sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, provides the patient with free medication, office visits, lab work, and follow-up care.  The patient must agree to take the ALLHAT medication and participate in the blind study of how the ALLHAT medications work.  All of the medications are FDA approved and are commonly used to treat hypertension and elevated cholesterol.

Women, Infant, and Children (WIC) 
CRHSystem at Hamilton Health Center is the provider for the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program in Dauphin County.  WIC provides nutritious foods and nutrition information to approximately 5,800 pregnant, breastfeeding an post-partum women, infants and children each month.  Eligibility requirements include:  income, residency, and medical or nutritional risk.  The Dauphin County program serves the participants at 16 sites throughout the county in permanent, satellite and mobile offices.

Social Services
The Social Services Department strives to meet the non-medical needs of CRHSystem's patients.  Needs include:  concrete (food, housing, employment, insurance, etc); mental health needs; drug and alcohol issues; and other issues identified by the medical provider.  The social workers meet with the patients to identify needs and arrange for services, using existing community services wherever possible.  The social work department serves many of the patients seen at CRHSystem.

Diabetes Education
Taking Control is a diabetes education program designed to integrate state of the art medical/nutrition instruction with diabetes self care management.  The program, sponsored by the PA Department of Health is open to all citizens of Pennsylvania without regard to income or medical insurance coverage.  It is however, geared to African American and Latino clients due to the increased prevalence of diabetes in this population. 

The program consists of  7-two hour classes which address both nutritional and medical aspects necessary to better self-manage their disease.  Patients receive a blood glucose monitor and are instructed on its use.  In addition, each class includes a home cooked meal appropriate for those with diabetes which the clients help to prepare.  The class is taught by a registered dietian and a registered nurse diabetic educator.  After graduation, the nurse diabetic educator provides follow up monitoring and care to participating clients for two years including laboratory assessments pertinent to diabetes.  Since its inception over 200 clients have graduated.  The diabetes educator performs follow-up assessment and care for this group including over 300 home visits per year.

School Based Health Centers
Hamilton Health Center operates two school-based sites in the Harrisburg School District.  The Camp Curtin Elementary site in Uptown Harrisburg offers medical, mental health and social services to the students and their family members.  The Foose Elementary site in South Harrisburg, offers medical, dental, mental health, social services and WIC to students and their families. 

Community Health ProjectThe Community Health Project provides free immunizations, HIV prevention counseling, free STD testing and counseling and free PAP smears.

Immunizations are offered at no charge to persons in the community who have no insurance, have insurance with no coverage for shots, or need an immigration physical and cannot afford the shots.  All regular childhood shots are included.  Adults shots include: dT, MMR and Flu vaccines.  All visits are recorded and tracked using CASA (Clinical Assessment Software Application) which is being used by medical institutions statewide to track and increase immunization rates.

STD counseling and testing is offered free of charge to persons in the community who have no insurance or who are underinsured.  Patients are seen by the medical provider and tested for gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis an herpes.  Appropriate treatment is prescribed.  Free PAP smears are also available.

Delta Dental
The Delta Dental Program is sponsored by the Delta Dental Insurance Company in collaboration with the Harrisburg School District.  Eligibility requirements include: child must be in first through sixth grade, have no dental insurance, attend Harrisburg School District.  One emergency visit per year, for older sibling is allowed.  Services offered include:  preventative dentistry, restorative dentistry and oral surgery by referral.

Free Pregnancy Testing
Hamilton Health Center offers free pregnancy testing Monday-Friday mornings to women in the community.  Persons receiving positive results are offered an opportunity to receive their prenatal care at Hamilton Health Center.  Persons receiving a negative result are offered an appointment in the family planning clinic on Thursday afternoons.

Healthy Women 50+
The Health Women 50+: Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Project is part of the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program initiated in 1993 and is administered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  The goal of the project is to reduce breast and cervical cancer mortality by increasing the availability of cancer education and screening.  The target population of this project is women 40 years of age and older who are low income (250% of poverty or less), uninsured, or underinsured.

CRHSystem at Hamilton Health Center contracts with the Family Health Council of Central PA, Inc.. to provide screening and follow-up for eligible women.  Education, breast and pelvic exams, pap smears, screening, mammograms, and diagnostic and follow-up procedures as indicates are provided annually to enrolled clients.  Women can enroll by calling CRHSystem and requesting a BCCP (Health Women 50+) appointment.
